DEARFIELD

History of Dearfield

Dearfield was an African American town that was established in 1909 by a man named O.T Jackson. The town of Dearfield was swept away by the Great Depression. 31 years later, only 12 people remained in Dearfield. When O.T Jackson passed, the population began to decrease slowly. The town was abandoned shortly after, and for years now has been listed as one of the most dangerous places to visit in Colorado due to the breakage of buildings.

ST. ELMO

History of St. Elmo

St. Elmo was a great town for mining in the 1880's. Hundreds of men were employed with mining jobs, which allowed Colorado to produce millions of dollars. This was the beginning of the gold and silver movement. Issues began to strike in the late 1950's and all of 2,000 residents began to leave, causing the population to decrease drastically. The mail services, businesses and the railroad all faced a drastic decline. Everything within St. Elmo was abandoned in 1922. Despite all of these changes, St. Elmo holds a historic title of being one of Colorado's #1 Ghost Towns.
